If you know me, you know that reading is way up high on my list of favorite things to do. I love it most of all during the cozy months! Seriously, reading is penciled into my daily routine so that I always have time for it. Routines should be made up of things we enjoy as much as possible so of course I have to include my reading time. There is nothing more relaxing to me than feeling just a little sleepy, lighting a candle, and opening a book. Bonus points if I’m loving it!!
Since it’s cozy season, I’ve curated a list of books that feel like fall. The shift from light hearted beach read to darker and cozier reads is here!! Enjoy <3
DARK ACADEMIA VIBES

The Secret History by Donna Tartt
The Secret History was such a pleasant surprise! I’m absolutely one to judge a book by its cover and this wasn’t my favorite, but the content made up for the cover and then some. This novel takes place in New England on a college campus, where a group of elitist students are a caught in the middle of a scandalous murder.
…

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio
This is another novel that follows a group of rather elitist Shakespeare students. Rising tensions and power struggles eventually lead to a murder mystery. The book alternates points of view from present day to 10 years earlier.

FANTASTICAL AND MAGICAL VIBES

The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown
I’m actually finishing up this book right now. I fell in love from the first page. The story follows a woman who works in a book shop and happens upon a magical book that allows her to travel pretty much anywhere. But, it comes at a deadly price.
…

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
A mysterious traveling circus that only appears at night. Gorgeous imagery. Forbidden love. What else do you need?! This was a beautifully written book with such a unique plot!
…
CUTE AND COZY VIBES

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
This was such a cute read! It reminded me a bit of ‘The House on the Cerulean Sea.” We follow a young isolated witch finds as belonging at the Nowhere House, with a group of quirky young witches and the house’s other residents.
…

Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice by Katie Cicatelli-Cuc
I actually picked this one up at the Barnes and Noble Cafe. It was $5 with any purchase of a cafe item, so I was influenced! It’s also super cute and filled with all the fall vibes. Think light-hearted and small town vibes.

SLIGHTLY SPOOKY VIBES

The September House by Carissa Orlando
Imagine buying your dream house and the walls start bleeding. That is what happens to our main characters every September in this eery novel. Be ready for suspense, horror, and a little bit of dark humor in this one.
…

Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom
Oh my GOSH, I did love this one. This book was so very interesting. It follows a widow who is outcast from her Puritan society, who befriends a mysterious spirit named Slewfoot (implied to be the devil). It’s the kind of book you could spend hours analyzing and discussing, if that’s your thing!
…
LASTING IMPRESSION

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Such an amazing read! I know it seems like I say that about every book, but this one was a real treat. Addie makes a “deal with the devil,” to escape an arranged marriage. In doing so, she lives forever but is cursed to be forgotten by anyone she meets. Until one day, hundreds of years later, a boy remembers her.
…

Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell
This is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in a way, as the title suggests. It is an imagining of how Shakespeare and his wife Anne Hathaway (named Agnes in the book) may have experienced the grief that came after their son ‘Hamnet’s’ death. Another beautiful and memorable read that is cozy for fall!
