How to Reset After a Trip

I absolutely love a reset! Mo and I are major weekend travelers so we often find ourselves coming home late on a Sunday absolutely exhausted but fulfilled. Just recently we returned from a trip up north to search wedding venues (eek!!). It was a quick turnaround, we’re talking about 36 hours, but a weekend trip nonetheless. As you may know, I’m big on routines and staying healthy, but I’m also big on living my life and having FUN! Sleep, eating well, and exercise are so important but so is balance. I do my best to integrate wellness into my life wherever possible, but it is not the only thing that matters in my life. That being said, sometimes I have a little too much fun during my travels and I definitely don’t follow a solid routine, so returning home calls for a reset!

I like to reset after a trip asap, I’m talking the day I arrive home. I totally advise resetting the day you get home if you can, but take the tips as they work for you. Below are a few ways I reset my mind and body after a trip!

For the mind:

  1. Unpack immediately. Seriously, this will change your travel life. My fiance can tell you, the first thing I do when we walk in the door after any trip, is start unpacking the suitcase. I really don’t like having the suitcase sitting around for too long after a trip and it helps having everything back in its place. If anything, at least unpack the toiletries immediately so that you’re ready for a shower or your skin care routine. Then store your suitcase so it’s not sitting out. It honestly takes less than 10 minutes, it just takes a burst of motivation!
  2. Do a load of wash. Unless you did laundry on your trip, it is likely you have washing to do. I kind of multitask with this one while I unpack. Any dirty clothing goes immediately into the washer rather than the hamper. I pour in some Tide and my clothes are washed of their suitcase / hotel smell. This also sets me up for success in the coming days so that it’s like I was never even on a trip, because there is no extra laundry!
  3. Sit down and read a book (preferably while the wash is running.) Of course I am going to work reading into my reset! After unpacking and putting on the laundry, you deserve to relax! Take some time to read and have quiet time after the hustle and bustle of being away. I’m currently reading “The Wrong Sister,” by Claire Douglas. SO good so far!!

For the body:

  1. Have a home cooked meal. Okay I knowwww it’s so tempting to get take out after a trip, especially if you don’t have much food in the house after being away. But my reasoning for this is that I definitely ate out a lot while away and I’ll need to jump back into my cooking routine at some point so why not do it right away? It’s good for the wallet and the body.
  2. Take a full body shower. This is also because you deserve it. Wash the plane or the stuffiness of the car off of you. Use all of your luxurious products that you couldn’t use during the trip. My showers away from home are what I call ‘bare bones’ showers. I love coming home and being able to use my tree hut body scrubs and my nice shampoos. Enjoy it all and take your time.
  3. Get groceries for the week or make a list of groceries to get. So I totally get it if you aren’t up for leaving the house, but at least make your list! It’ll feel good to get it on paper if anything.
  4. Go to sleep early. By early I mean about an hour before you normally would, and don’t scroll! Pick up that book you were reading earlier and continue. Sleep is majorly important in resetting your body to equilibrium and the idea is that you’ll wake up the day after travel refreshed and ready for the day without setbacks. I highly recommend some lavender oil or room spray to aid with relaxation before sleep.

And more:

  1. Buy some flowers. Okay so our current home is a little ~old~ so it sometimes smells a little dusty. Flowers help to freshen up the room and can add a sort of life to your space after it staying stagnant for a while.
  2. Plan your next trip. If you’re feeling ambitious, plan another weekend getaway! This is a great way to avoid the post-vacation blues and can be fun to do even if you never actually take the specific trip that you plan.

Reset, by definition, is to “set” again or to start again. So to reset, all you really have to do is get yourself back to your regular routine. This looks different for everyone, but resetting can also mean starting new. Maybe you’re not typically an organized person but want to be. Try taking just 1 of the tips above and doing it the day you arrive home. xo
